The digitization and automation of processes and distribution vehicles will reduce logistics and transportation costs by 47% by 2030, according to a new report by Strategy & PwC.

Digitalization and automation will halve the cost of logistics

In addition, there will be significant gains in efficiency. Autonomous trucks, which could be used for up to 78% of journeys by 2030 are not subject to driving times and rest periods. Furthermore, idle times between trips will be reduced with the use of algorithms. "In just a few years, the commercial vehicle and logistics sectors will merge to form an ecosystem that will be managed digitally and efficiently. Robots are already being used at distribution centers, in electric vehicles and are being applied in last-mile logistics," says Gerhard Nowak, Strategy& partner for Germany.

He adds “PwC analysis indicates that a consistently digitized supply chain saves administrative expense, reduces inventories and lowers insurance costs. In total savings of up to 41% are possible by 2030, compared to current supply chains.”

Product delivery in the first mile will become more efficient in the coming years, especially in light of the automated allocation of cargo to the truck and platform solutions replacing manual tasks. Representing a potential saving of 45% by 2030, according to the study.

For last-mile deliveries, data-driven search analysis, automated deliveries (e.g. via drones) and reduced administrative burdens could cut costs by 51%, says the 2018 Global Truck Study.
