A new version of smart tachograph to be implemented in 2023

The new smart tachograph version has increased tamper resistance and includes new features.

The European Union (EU) will implement a new version of the smart tachograph (smart tachograph version 2) in 2023 following the recent amendment to EU Regulation (EU) No 165/2014.

Version 2 will increase the anti-tampering resistance of the current tachograph as it will encompass new functionalities to enforce EU legislation on cabotage and posting of workers, such as:

• The registration of border crossings;
• Detecting the vehicle’s position during loading and unloading operations;
• The ability to authenticate satellite signals;
• Fitting an internal sensor independent of the external motion sensor.

When will the new version be implemented?

The smart tachograph version 2 must be fitted in newly registered vehicles as of August 21, 2023, and in already registered vehicles engaged in international road transport operations by August 21, 2025, at the latest (by December 31, 2024, for vehicles equipped with an analog or digital non-smart tachograph, and August 18, 2025, for vehicles equipped with a smart tachograph version 1). In addition, as of July 1, 2026, vehicles above 2.5 tons in international road transport or cabotage operations will be equipped with a smart tachograph version 2.
