EU postpones the introduction of the smart tachograph until June 2019

Regulation 502/2018 published in the Official Journal of the European Union on March 28, 2018, postpones the introduction of the smart digital tachograph until June 15, 2019.

The notion of an intelligent tachograph was introduced, for the first time, in European legislation under Regulation (EU) No. 165/2014. This second-generation digital tachograph allows connection to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and early detection of remote communication equipment with an optional interface for intelligent transport systems.

European Regulation (Regulation 799/2016) established technical requirements for the construction, testing, installation, operation, and repair of these smart digital tachographs.
The latest European regulation, adopted on February 28, 2018, amends several articles of Reg. 799/2016.

Some of the changes to Reg. 799/2016 are purely technical, but one refers to the deadline for its entry into force, which moved from March to June 15, 2019. This deadline applies only to commercial vehicles registered after this date. Those previously registered, it is still in discussion if they have to install second-generation digital tachographs by 2020 or 2030.

Another important amendment to the regulation determines that geographical location is recorded every three hours, which includes time when stopped.
