The right motivation improves fleet driver safety

Wed, 17/01/2018 - 14:43
Global Road Safety

Did you know that most fleet accidents are caused by driver error and are largely preventable?

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation, nearly 80% of all vehicle crashes in South Africa were a result of at least one traffic violation.  As so many accidents are caused by driver error, driver safety is a major concern for every fleet company and its owners. There are many advantages to operating a safe fleet, among the most beneficial being efficient operation and the avoidance of injury and accidents.
The right motivation improves fleet driver safety
When your fleet drives safely, it enhances the reputation of your business and the wellbeing of your employees. In our efforts to raise awareness and to improve fleet driver safety, we have highlighted 4 ways to educate fleet drivers, increase efficiency, and improve processes.

Safe fleets mean safe drivers and safe vehicles

A safe fleet is about more than just the driver’s safety and behavior on the road. You must also ensure that the vehicle itself is well maintained and equipped to drive for long distances. In fact, studies from Enterprise Rent-A-Car claim that 43% of grey fleet drivers in the UK don’t undergo regular maintenance checks on their vehicles. Without a maintained system, the driver will only have so much protection on the road. That is why fleet drivers need preventative maintenance, up to date processes, and regular inspections carried out on the vehicle.

Provide defensive training for fleet employees

To help avoid and prevent accidents, fleet drivers must undergo safety education. While most accidents are not the fault of the fleet driver, teaching proper defensive driving techniques can encourage your employees to follow these useful driving tips. Providing refresher courses that highlight important fleet topics are an essential part of your on-going program for fleet driver safety.

Monitor driver attitude and behavior

Staying updated on driver mileage and road behavior can help reduce unnecessary journey time, conserve fuel, and increase driver safety. GPS vehicle tracking and monitoring software will give you 24/7 access to your driver’s location and behavior from the convenience of your mobile device or desktop.

Create and continue safety programs

There are plenty of ways to keep fleet employees motivated such as payment plans, vacation time, bonuses, and updated equipment. Once fleet drivers complete their driver safety awareness course and are rewarded for their adoption of safety behavior, you will enjoy outstanding performance.
