One of the most interesting books I’ve read recently is called “Talent is Overrated: What really separates world-class performers from everybody else”.
The book discusses the reasons – and also the myths – that explain why some people become world-class geniuses – like Mozart, Picasso, Newton or Bill Gates – whilst a large majority never seems to be able to reach that kind of peak performance.
How important is talent in the equation? Is it necessary to possess super-genes? Or is it just a matter of working hard enough?
After reading the book, you may find that neither condition, by itself, is enough to produce such great performers. Mozart certainly boasted great skill from an early age; but the fact is that by the time he was 10, he had invested more hours playing and studying music than most musicians spend at either in a life time.
So is studying hard enough the secret? Yes, in a way. Not everybody, however, is capable of dedicating their full life to studying and practicing one skill with such devotion as Mozart did. It basically involves blocking out almost everything else from your life. And that is the hard truth. Determination and resilience are absolutely paramount in order for someone not to give up and finally study and practice enough to amaze everybody else. (In the book “Outliers”, author Malcolm Gladwell says that it takes roughly ten thousand hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field.)
I believe the same is true of organizations. That’s why Frotcom has focused from the outset on professional fleet management. That’s what we do 100% of the time. We are determined to develop the best solution on the market to help fleet managers become world-class performers in the management of their fleets.
